A Mommy & Me Photo Session Among the Apple Blossoms

Photographing Motherhood Among the Apple Blossoms

There are few places I love photographing more than a blooming orchard. If it were up to me, I’d probably schedule sessions in one every spring.

For this mommy and me photo session, I met a sweet mom and her nine-month-old son among rows of apple trees just beginning to bloom. The white blossoms created the kind of soft, natural backdrop that hardly needs anything added to it.

Letting the Orchard Do the Work

One of the things I loved most about this session was how simple everything was.

Mom and baby both wore very neutral outfits, and we brought along a simple white blanket where they could sit and play together. The blossoms surrounding them were the perfect accent, nothing competing for attention, just soft light, gentle textures, and the quiet beauty of the orchard.

Sometimes the best sessions are the ones where you don’t try to do too much. We let the orchard be what it already was.

A Nine-Month-Old’s Curiosity

At nine months old, this little guy was at the perfect age for photos. Curious about everything, but still happiest staying close to mom.

We spent part of the session sitting together on the blanket, playing and laughing, and then letting him explore a bit as he looked at the blossoms around him. The way babies take in the world at this age is always one of my favorite things to photograph.

Pressing Pause for a Moment

As a mom myself, sessions like this always feel especially meaningful.

Life with little ones is busy, and can feel pretty chaotic, it’s easy to miss how quickly the quiet moments pass. Photographing motherhood sometimes feels like pressing pause for a second, capturing the way a baby leans into their mom, the little smiles, the curiosity about the world around them.

Because the truth is, babies grow fast. Really fast.

And these small, simple moments together are really the biggest ones, aren’t they?

Apple Blossom Season in Charleston and the Mountains

With spring arriving and orchards beginning to bloom again, this session has been on my mind lately.

Apple blossoms have a short window each year, which is part of what makes them so special. In the Charleston area, blooms usually arrive around mid-to-late March, while orchards in the mountains tend to peak a little later, usually late March through early April.

This mommy and me photo session in a blooming orchard was photographed in early April in the mountains, right when the blossoms were at their best. If you’ve been dreaming about a mommy and me photo session among apple blossoms, this time of year is exactly when the magic happens, and it’s not too late to plan something beautiful.
