Morning sessions at Middleton Place always feel so sweet. The gardens are quiet, the light coming through the oaks is clean and soft, and everything just moves slower before Charleston fully wakes up for the day.

This Middleton Place family session in Charleston, SC was with one of the sweetest families, a family of four with two little boys who kept us moving the entire morning in the best way. At the time of this session, one was 3.5 and the other was 1.5, which meant a pretty perfect mix of running, exploring, breaks, and lots of snuggles.
And honestly, the little years are always my favorite to photograph.
I say this all the time, but my favorite family photos are almost never the ones where everyone is perfectly posed and smiling at the camera.

The photos I end up loving most are the interactive ones – parents chasing kids down a path, little hands reaching up for mom or dad, everyone laughing because the toddler has decided he absolutely will not sit still for even one second.

That’s what this session felt like.
We wandered through the gardens and pathways at Middleton Place, played with the boys, stopped for cuddles when needed, and mostly just let the morning happen naturally. No high pressure for the boys to “perform,” no forcing moments that weren’t there.

Just a family spending time together.

The light that morning was so good too. The sun filtering through the oak trees gave everything this soft, clean glow without feeling too intense.

Charleston, SC has so many beautiful places for family photos, but Middleton Place always feels especially timeless to me. There’s room for kids to move, quiet little corners everywhere, and enough variety that sessions never feel repetitive.

By the end of the morning, the boys were happily worn out, parents were probably ready for coffee (possibly stronger refreshment), and we had a gallery full of the kinds of moments that actually feel like this stage of life.

Which, at least to me, is the whole point.
One of my favorite parts about photographing families in Charleston is getting to document seasons that change so quickly. A one-year-old suddenly becomes a toddler. A three-year-old suddenly looks older overnight.

That’s part of why I love seeing this family for regular sessions. These mornings may feel ordinary while they’re happening, but years from now, these are the photos that will bring everyone right back to this stage of life.

And honestly, I can’t think of a better place to document it than under the oaks at Middleton Place.
