You’re planning your photo session in Charleston and trying to decide between the beach and downtown. Both are beautiful. Both would give you amazing photos. So how do you choose?
I’ve photographed couples at both locations. Here’s what I tell everyone who asks: there’s no wrong choice. But there is a choice that feels more like you.

Let me walk you through both options so you can decide what fits your style.
What Makes Beach Sessions Special for Couples in Charleston
A beach session gives you open space, natural light, and that relaxed coastal feeling Charleston is known for.
You get soft sand under your feet. The sound of waves in the background. Golden hour light reflecting off the water. It feels easy and natural.
I love shooting beach sessions because couples relax quickly. Something about being near the ocean makes people let their guard down. You stop worrying about posing perfectly and just enjoy being together.

The best beaches for sessions are Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms. Each has its own character, and I can recommend the right one based on what kind of backdrop you want.
Why Downtown Sessions for Couples Work So Well
A downtown session puts you in the heart of historic Charleston. Cobblestone streets. Colorful historic homes. Spanish moss hanging from ancient oaks.
You get architecture and Southern charm. The photos feel timeless and elegant. Every corner offers something beautiful.

Downtown sessions work especially well if you love the city feel or want variety in your photos. We can walk a few blocks and give you completely different backgrounds. Rainbow Row. Waterfront Park. Hidden garden gates.
I photograph downtown sessions with the same journalistic style I bring everywhere. I capture you walking the streets, laughing on a park bench, or stealing a quiet moment under the trees.
How Lighting and Timing Differ Between Locations
Here’s something most people don’t think about. The light behaves differently at the beach versus downtown.
Beach sessions need to happen close to sunset. The midday sun is too harsh on the open sand. But that golden hour light? It’s absolutely gorgeous. Soft, warm, and flattering.

Downtown gives us more flexibility. The buildings create natural shade. We can shoot earlier in the day if that works better for your schedule. We still aim for late afternoon when possible because the light is beautiful, but we have options.
Both locations look stunning in the right light. I’ll help you pick the best time for whichever spot you choose.
What You’ll Want to Wear for Your Photo Session
Your outfit choice depends partly on location.
For a beach session, think flowy and relaxed. Light fabrics that move in the breeze. Bare feet or sandals you can easily slip off. Colors that complement the sand and water.

For a downtown session, you can dress it up more if you want. The historic architecture pairs beautifully with dressier outfits. But casual works great too. The key is wearing something that feels like you.
I’ll send you a style guide once you book. It includes outfit suggestions for both beach and downtown sessions, so you’ll feel confident about what to wear.
How I Shoot Both Locations
As a Charleston photographer, I document your story as it happens whether we’re at the beach or downtown.
I don’t pose you stiffly. I give you gentle direction that helps you move naturally together. Walk toward me. Whisper something funny. Spin her around. The moments that unfold are real and honest.
At the beach, I might have you walk along the water’s edge or sit in the dunes. Downtown, we might stroll through quiet streets or pause on a historic porch.

Either way, I operate with a comforting calm. I know what it’s like being on the other side of the camera. I make you feel at ease so your true selves shine through.
Consider the Season
Charleston’s seasons affect both locations differently.
Summer beach sessions are warm and beautiful but can be humid. Downtown can feel hot between the buildings. We plan for late day shoots when it’s cooler.
Fall and spring are perfect for both locations. Comfortable temperatures. Beautiful light. These are my favorite seasons to shoot in Charleston.

Winter beach sessions can be surprisingly lovely. The beaches are empty and peaceful. Downtown looks beautiful year-round, and the cooler weather actually makes walking around more comfortable.
Trust Your Gut
Here’s my honest advice. Think about where you feel most like yourselves.
Do you love the ocean? Do you feel calm and happy near the water? Choose a beach session.
Do you love the city? Do you appreciate architecture and history? Choose downtown.

Both locations will give you beautiful photos. I’ll make sure of that. But the photos that mean the most are the ones where you genuinely feel comfortable and happy.
