How to get natural smiles from kids during a photo shoot

As a family photographer in Charleston, South Carolina, I have learned that the key to stunning child portraits isn’t just about technical skill – it’s about connection.

Those authentic, sparkling smiles that light up a room? They come from creating a comfortable, fun environment where kids can truly be themselves.

Let’s dive into some tried-and-true techniques for getting those natural, heartwarming smiles during your next kid’s photo shoot.

Make It a Game

Why not make the kid’s photo shoot into one big game, since kids thrive on play? In Charleston’s beautiful parks or on our sunny beaches, I love to organize simple activities that bring out genuine laughs.

A game of chase, blowing bubbles, or even a silly dance contest can work wonders. The camera becomes secondary, and those natural expressions shine through.

Get on Their Level

Literally and figuratively, meeting kids where they are is crucial. I often find myself crouching down or even lying on the ground to see the world from their perspective.

This approach not only creates more interesting angles for photos but also helps children feel more at ease. When we are eye-to-eye, the connection is stronger, and smiles come more easily.

Embrace the Silly

Don’t be afraid to be a little goofy! Funny faces, ridiculous noises, or even a perfectly timed joke can break the ice and elicit those belly laughs we all love. Remember, it’s not about getting kids to say “cheese” – it’s about creating moments of joy that naturally result in beautiful expressions.

Let Them Lead

Sometimes, the best approach is to step back and let kids show you what makes them happy. Whether it’s exploring the shoreline at Folly Beach or climbing their favorite tree in Hampton Park, allowing children to engage in activities they enjoy often leads to the most genuine smiles and expressions.

Incorporate Comfort Items

For younger children, especially, having a favorite toy or comfort item can make all the difference. That well-loved stuffed animal or special blanket can provide a sense of security, helping kids relax and smile more naturally. Plus, these items often hold special meaning, making the kid’s photos even more treasured as the years go by.

Patience is Key

As any parent knows, kids have their own timelines. Some days, they are all smiles from the start, other times, it takes a while to warm up.

As a photographer, I have learned that patience is essential. Sometimes, the best kid photo shots come at the end of a session when everyone’s relaxed and having fun.

Include the Whole Family

Often, the easiest way to get natural smiles from kids is to include their parents or siblings in the fun.

A family tickle fight or a game of “airplane” with Dad can result in those joyful, candid moments that make for unforgettable photos.

These interactions also capture the love and connection within your family – something you will treasure for years to come.

Celebrate Their Uniqueness

Every child is different, and what brings out a smile in one might not work for another, so I do my best to get to know each child’s individuality.

By celebrating their unique personalities and interests, we create an environment where they feel valued and comfortable being themselves.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection – it’s documenting the genuine essence of your child. Those slightly crooked grins, the mischievous twinkle in their eyes, or even the thoughtful, serious expressions are all part of who they are at this moment in time.
