Patrick came up with one of my favorite proposal plans to date.

Instead of telling Emily he had planned an Isle of Palms beach proposal, he told her he had booked a photographer to take photos of them with their dogs at the beach near Charleston, SC. Naturally, Emily assumed I was there strictly as a pet photographer – which honestly made the whole thing even better.

We had already talked through the plan ahead of time, including the secret phrase I’d say once we had them set up in the right spot. So while they were standing together with the dogs for what Emily thought was just another photo, I gave the cue.
And immediately, Patrick dropped to one knee.

Emily was completely caught off guard in the best way. The reaction, the excitement, the surprise for half a second while she realized what was happening – all of it was perfect.

Including the dogs absolutely doing their own thing the entire time.

At one point during the session, their dachshund slipped his collar and took off down the beach after another dog, which created a brief moment of absolute chaos. Thankfully, crisis was quickly averted, the runaway pup was recovered, and we all kept going like nothing had happened.

Honestly, it made the session even better.

The best proposal sessions usually aren’t perfectly polished anyway. They’re personal, a little unpredictable, and actually feel like the couple involved. Patrick and Emily’s Isle of Palms proposal was exactly that.

The weather that evening looked questionable from the start. Dark storm clouds rolled in over Isle of Palms beach, and it felt like rain could start at any second.

But somehow, it held off for us.

Instead, we ended up with the most dramatic skies for their photos at the end of the session. The dark clouds mixed with the soft evening light gave everything this amazing vibe without losing the relaxed energy of the evening.

Most of the session happened with the dogs tagging along, which honestly felt fitting since they were such a big part of the proposal story. Toward the end, Patrick and Emily put them in the car for a few photos of just the two of them before the light disappeared completely.

One of the things I love most about photographing proposals on Isle of Palms near Charleston, SC is how relaxed the beach feels. There’s plenty of room to spread out, dogs are welcome, and sessions never feel crowded or overly formal.

For couples bringing their dogs along, Isle of Palms is honestly one of the best spots around Charleston for a proposal session.
Patrick and Emily were so much fun to photograph. Relaxed, funny, charismatic together, and completely willing to roll with whatever the evening threw at us – including runaway dogs and incoming storms.
And honestly, that combination made this Isle of Palms beach proposal even better.
