Tips for Preparing Your Newborn for a Photo Session

Hello, new parents in Charleston! As a newborn photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing the early days of many families. I know how busy and overwhelming these first weeks can be, and preparing for a newborn photo session might feel like just another task. But don’t worry, I’m here to help you with some simple tips to make your newborn’s photo session smooth and enjoyable.

Create a Cozy Environment

Your baby is still adjusting to life outside the womb, so we want to make them feel as comfortable as possible during the session.

  1. Keep It Warm: Newborns love warmth, which helps them relax. We’ll keep the room cozy, around 80-85 degrees, to ensure your baby is comfortable, especially for those cute, bare-skin poses.
  2. Soft Lighting: We’ll use gentle, natural light whenever we can. This not only looks great in photos but is also easy on your baby’s sensitive eyes.

Schedule Your Session at the Right Time

Planning ahead can help ensure we capture the best moments.

  1. Best Age: The ideal time for newborn photos is between 5-14 days old. Babies at this age are usually sleepier which makes it easier to get those adorable sleepy photos.
  1. Optimal Time of Day: Try to schedule the session when your baby is usually calm and content, often in the morning after their first feeding.
  2. Feed Before the Session: Feeding your baby right before the session can help them feel full and sleepy, making the session more relaxed.

Dress Comfortably and Simply

When it comes to newborn photos, simple outfits often work best.

  1. Simple Outfits: Plain white onesies, soft neutral-colored wraps, or just a diaper cover can create timeless, beautiful images.
  2. Avoid Tight Clothing: Choose loose, comfortable clothing for your baby to avoid any marks on their delicate skin.

Involving Siblings

If you have older children, include them in the session to capture some family moments.

  1. Explain the Process: Let older siblings know what to expect and how they can help.
  2. Comfortable Clothes for Kids: Dress older children in comfortable clothes that they feel good in.
  3. Bring a Favorite Toy: Having a favorite toy can help older siblings feel more at ease and can even be included in some photos.

What to Pack for the Newborn Session

Here’s a checklist of items to bring along to the newborn session:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (if your baby uses one)
  • Extra milk or formula
  • A change of clothes for parents (just in case)
  • Any special blankets or props you want to include in the photos

Focus on the Love and Connection

Above all, remember that these photos are about capturing the love and connection within your family. Don’t worry if everything doesn’t go perfectly – sometimes the best moments are unplanned.

Your baby might need extra feeding breaks, diaper changes, or cuddles, and that’s absolutely fine. We’ll take our time, following your baby’s lead.

Here in Charleston, we enjoy a special warmth that goes beyond our sunny weather. It’s in our gentle sea breezes, the easy pace of our city, and most of all, in the love that fills our homes. Let’s bring that same warmth and love into your newborn’s photo session.
